October Gallery Openings in the CWE

This October, four galleries in the Central West End will be launching new exhibitions! From ceramic sculptures to immersive paintings, there are plenty of opportunities to take in some beautiful artwork this fall!

Duane Reed Gallery

The gallery is pleased to announce the opening reception of their latest exhibition: Harumi Nakashima and Aya Mori, with a special pop-up exhibit featuring Kevin Snipes.

Japanese artist Harumi Nakashima creates free-form ceramic sculptures that feature organic, yet psychedelic characteristics. Nakashima, mostly known for beautifully structured, odd geometric shapes embellished with iconic polka dots, works with a level of intricacy that demonstrates the artist’s attention to detail.

Aya Mori follows in the footsteps of her mentor and teacher, Harumi Nakashima. She graduated from Aichi University in 2014 with her BA, where Nakashima teaches. Mori has since participated in several prestigious exhibitions in her very early career, including the Hagi Grand Prize Exhibition, Yamaguchi, Japan (2017) and the 10th International Ceramics Competition in Gifu, Japan (2014), where she received the Special Judges Award.

Kevin Snipes is an American visual artist, born in Philadelphia and raised in Cleveland. Snipes’ artwork explores concepts of otherness by employing techniques of figurative narration and craft to form objects that cross the boundary between sculpture and painting. His work is a combination of atypical pottery forms, quirky figurative drawings and contemporary vernacular language. Kevin’s work is influenced by an array of traditional and nontraditional art forms, including street art, architecture, contemporary painting, the avid love of art history and even children’s toys and drawings.

Houska Gallery

The gallery is pleased to announce the opening reception of their latest exhibition: Jeremy Rabus: Since It Is Only The Mirror.

Jeremy Rabus’ paintings are composed using an intuitive process of layering and excavating. He arranges vivid hues alongside subtle tones, or rich and opaque passages with translucent glazes. These elements overlap, intertwine, and accentuate each other. As the piece evolves, Rabus grinds into the layers with a power sander, revealing new textures, early brushstrokes, and stunning color “conversations” which tell the painting’s story of its making.

Jeremy Rabus is a painter who lives and works in St. Louis. He has exhibited in several solo and group shows in NYC, Miami, Boston, LA, Atlanta, Columbus, and his hometown of St. Louis. Rabus also serves as a studio facilitator at Living Arts Studio in Maplewood, assisting artists with disabilities.

Philip Slein Gallery

Philip Slein Gallery is pleased to present: Blondie Bubba: New Paintings by Jamie Adams.

Blondie Bubba is the name of Jamie Adams’s new series of paintings, and also a reference to Jamie’s father- both his father’s youth (wavy blonde hair) and his old age (Bubba is what his grandchildren call him). Jamie effortlessly (it seems) depicts the past and present existing simultaneously. His classically rendered figures add to the effect. Likewise, his figures are frequently combinations of people, sometimes appearing androgynous as a result.

In his new series of paintings, the figures do not seem to inhabit a real space, but seem posed in front of rear-screen projection. They are frequently floating, as if painted on the ceiling of a chapel or palace. In any event, his figures continue to include family, this time his father moves front and center in Jamie’s dreams.

The gallery is thrilled to lead a series of citywide exhibitions and activations in St. Louis from September through November, in partnership with For Freedoms, a platform founded by activist artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman in 2016 to foster dialogue about race, art, education, advertising and politics in the United States.

On October 18, you’re invited to their newest exhibition: Cry of Victory and Short Walks to Freedom, curated by Modou Dieng.

Featuring fourteen artists of various disciplines, the exhibition celebrates creative gestures as small, yet impactful victories in the context of a dire political administration that is actively cutting funding for the arts. Together, each artists’ work provides a renewed sense of optimism and the potential for dialogue, progress and change.
