5 Things to Do This Weekend in the CWE: July 12-14

Not sure what to do this weekend? The Central West End has you covered! We’ve got events happening Friday through Sunday. Whether you’re interested in viewing new art, shopping great deals, trying new restaurants or listening to live music, we’ve got something in the neighborhood for everything. There’s so much to do this weekend and here are several that we’re highlighting.

Attend Opening Receptions

Come to the CWE this Friday for a night of art. From 5-8 p.m., Duane Reed Gallery and Houska Gallery will have their opening receptions and Square One Gallery will have theirs from 6-9 p.m. Duane Reed Gallery will have work from artists Kensuke Yamade, Anna Johnson and Sun Smith-Foret. You will view textile constructions, paintings, sculptures and more. Their art explores the transcendental, the sadness and humor of everyday life, accentuating the value of media often deemed disposable and more.

Houska Gallery will have the opening of their summer group show, “Salt Lick”, featuring work from 12 artists. “Salt Lick” is described as drawing inspiration from summertime references. They will also have art from featured artist, Janie Stamm. Stamm’s work engages environmental and Queer histories. In this exhibit, viewers are invited to explore the overlooked kitschy motifs that can be found in the average Floridian condo. View this wide range art, grab a drink and discuss the works.

Square One Gallery’s opening reception of “Between Heaven and Earth” is a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Rachel English. Her painting technique involves layers of oil color and brushwork to describe cosmic forms on canvas. The exhibit embodies the urge to gaze upward and grapple with ideas of existential meaning.
