Love art? Then the Central West End is where you to go. There’s a lot of great shows, and events happening in the next few weeks!
Join Philip Slein Gallery Friday, January 10th for the opening of Catherine Howe-“I Am Nature”. Howe’s subject is the study of nature, and her paintings are very expressionistic, and are characterized by wild, gestural brushstrokes giving life to still objects. Howe is an artist based in New York, with a long history of exhibitions and critical success. Her 2012 show at Von Lintel Gallery was reviewed in Art in America, Art Critical and a catalog was produced with essays by Michele C. Cone and John Zinsser. Not only, has her work been reviewed in the aforementioned periodicals, but her work has been discussed in numerous publications such as the New York Times, Artforum, Bomb, Flash Art, the Huffington Post, and the Los Angeles Time. Howe is currently teaching in the graduate department at New York Academy.
Then on January 11th, Atrium Gallery is hosting Coffee with the DeLoopers. Atrium Gallery will be serving coffee, and showing videos of DeLooper’s work shown in a retrospective at the Katzen Museum, including commentary on his work by several curators. These short videos provide more insight into this accomplished international artist. One of DeLooper’s private “notebooks” will also be featured, offering pages for purchase.
On January 24th, James Kuiper-“Flow” opens at Atrium Gallery. Kuiper is an artist from California that paints semi-abstract pieces that reflect a changing environment, and point out the fragility, beauty and delicacy of our world. His work reflects his viewpoint of the California wilderness, and have an air of romance, nostalgia, regret and hope. These works are meant to call out the viewers complacency and to focus on the reality of a vanishing environment. Kuiper is originally from Michigan, and had lived/worked in a number of different places. He exhibits internationally, particularly in Spain and Brazil, and nationally, primarily on the West Coast. He currently is a Professor of Art at California State University, Chico. If you can’t make it to the opening, don’t miss the Artist Talk the following day (January 25th).
