SUMMARY:LBB Foundation & LBB present Derek Hydra
DESCRIPTION:Join the Left Bank Books Foundation and Left Bank Books as we welcome Derek Hyra\, Professor of Public Administration and Policy and founding director of the Metropolitan Policy Center at American University. By delving into the real estate history of the St. Louis region and Baltimore\, Hyra shows how rounds of urban renewal decisions to segregate\, divest\, displace and gentrify Black communities advance neighborhood inequality. Join us as Hyra presents his new book “Slow and Sudden Violence: Why and When Uprisings Occur”. \n  \n“By exposing the deep roots of contemporary racial unrest\, Derek Hyra lays bare the failures of urban policy to overcome social inequalities as they have metastasized over time. His prescriptions for addressing the multiple effects of what he calls slow violence in such places as Ferguson and Baltimore cry out for action in the private as well as the public sector.”–Howard Gillette\, Jr.\, author of “The Paradox of Urban Revitalization: Progress and Poverty in America’s Post-Industrial Era”. \n  \nHyra will personalize and sign copies after the presentation! Personalized and signed copies can be mailed anywhere in the country. Please order personalized copies before noon on September 10. \n  \nRSVP here. Order the book here. DESCRIPTION:Join the Left Bank Books Foundaiton as they welcome journalist and scholar Sara Fitzgerald to Left Bank Books in conversation with Frances Dickey. “The Silenced Muse” is the first full-length biography of Emily Hale\, the longtime secret love of celebrated poet T. S. Eliot. SUMMARY:LBB Foundation presents Jeffrey Zuckerman in conversation with Martin Riker
DESCRIPTION:Join the Left Bank Books Foundation and Left Bank Books as we welcome St. Louis native Jeffrey Zuckerman to discuss his most recent translation of “Jellyfish Have No Ears” by Adèle Rosenfeld. Zuckerman is celebrated in the literary world for his incredible translations. They are excited to welcome him back to St. Louis to discuss the translation for this profoundly moving debut novel. \n  \n“Rosenfeld is partially deaf and has found a perceptive translator in Jeffrey Zuckerman\, who is deaf and has drawn on a ‘lifetime of lip-reading’ . . . to carry the book’s puns and misreadings into vibrant English. “This holey language will never be deciphered completely\,’ Louise thinks\, and the homophone ‘holey’ is shrewd\, as the gaps in her reality give her an air of oddball mysticism. . . . A note of comic bewilderment recurs throughout Louise’s passage along the broken shore of coherence\, and the question is just how far into the tide of static she’ll allow herself to drift.”—Sam Sacks\, The Wall Street Journal. \n  \nZuckerman will be in conversation with Martin Riker\, an author\, Washington University professor\, and co-founder of the Dorothy Project. \n  \nZuckerman will personalize and sign copies after the presentation! Personalized and signed copies can be mailed anywhere in the country. Please order customized copies before noon on September 19. \n  \nRSVP here. Purchase the book here.

SUMMARY:Duane Reed Gallery Opening Reception: Jane A. Barrow
DESCRIPTION:Duane Reed Gallery is proud to announce a new body of paintings by St. Louis local Jane A. Barrow. Barrow’s paintings portray movement through space\, constructing fields that can only be viewed through one frozen moment. Barrow’s past bodies of work place the viewer in the cockpits of fighter jets\, twilight bogs\, and abstract planes grounded only by shadows\, all using complex compositions and earthy color palettes. Barrow’s current work focusses on arrangements of mid-flight leaves\, swirling and curling into complex patterns at the expense of unseen forces yet presented through a medium of complete stillness. \n  \nBarrow lives and works in the historic neighborhoods of downtown St. Louis. She has shown nationally and internationally\, with work in the collections of John Mellencamp\, the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg\, VA\, Lungwha University in Taipei\, Taiwan\, PNC Financial Services Group in Pittsburgh\, PA\, Ameren in St. Louis\, and CIBC in Chicago. She recently retired as Professor and Head of Painting at Southern Illinois University

SUMMARY:LBB\, LBB Foundation & Japan America Society of St. Louis present Judy Mundle
DESCRIPTION:Join Left Bank Books as they welcome Judy Mundle\, 2024 Indie Author Project Award-Memoir Winner\, celebrating her book “The Block Manager: A True Story of Love in the Midst of Japanese American Internment Camps”. \n  \n“Mundle guides us through a post-war landscape as apocalyptic—and enduring—as any dystopian film. You will walk away with a different conception of World War II\, and how we treat our own citizens in wartime\, than you had before opening the book. It is brilliant. It sticks with you. Bravo to Janet for sharing her story\, and Judy Mundle for her ingenuity in presenting it.” —Robert Yehling \n  \nMundle will personalize and sign copies after the presentation! SUMMARY:Opening Reception of Paws and Pawns: Exploring Animal Chess Sets
DESCRIPTION:Join the World Chess Hall of Fame for the opening reception of Paws and Pawns: Exploring Animal Chess Sets\, on Thursday\, Jan. 30\, 5 to 8 p.m.\, with complimentary admission\, valet and refreshments. \n  \nPaws and Pawns: Exploring Animal Chess Sets displays a menagerie of animal-themed chess sets from around the world\, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the animal kingdom to chess artists. Many of these are from the collection of the World Chess Hall of Fame\, while others are on loan from artists\, members of Chess Collectors International\, and local collectors. Artists have taken inspiration from the natural world to reinterpret familiar chess pieces for centuries. Some draw on an animal’s reputation to reimagine it as a chess piece—regal lions and powerful Tyrannosaurus rexes\, known as the kings of the jungle and dinosaurs respectively\, appear as rulers in some sets. In other cases\, artists subvert expectations\, elevating meek or delicate creatures like mice or frogs to powerful players when they step—or hop—onto the chess board. Though the animal kingdom is known for conflict between predator and prey\, many of the sets feature humorous perspectives\, showcasing pieces inspired by beloved pets or cartoon-like versions of beasts of the wild. Other sets serve as splendid reminders of the spectacular diversity of wildlife in a specific location like the ocean or a jungle. \n  \nRSVPs are recommended. Please email events@worldchesshof.org for more information.
